50 years ago: 1965

• Winners of the Albert Lea All-City Tennis Tournament were Vicki Sherburne, junior girls; Don Hendrickson, junior boys; and Ron Bolinger, senior boys.

• Hayward won the American Division of the Albert Lea Church Softball League after defeating Mansfield Lutheran 16-11. Neal Skaar and Bruce Olson homered for Hayward.

• Hayward defeated Freeborn 8-3 in the first game of a best-of-three series in the State Line League amateur baseball playoffs. Jim Lair was the winning pitcher. Hayward was led by Neal Skaar and Dennis Lair with three hits each.

• Scotsman defeated Interstate Power 25-11 in the Albert Lea Slowpitch League. Ed Bertelson and Dick Ackland homered, and Chuck Anderson had four hits for Scotsman.

 

25 years ago: 1990

• In the ASA 1990 Class C men’s fastpitch state softball championship tournament, Da Boys of Geneva defeated Oak Lawn 10-2 in a five-inning game. Scandia defeated Da Boys 9-5 and advanced to the national tournament in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Da Boys’ second-place finish allowed them to also go to the national tournament.

• Winners in the Green Lea Ladies Invitational Golf Tournament (low gross) were Barb Willmert, championship flight; Arlyss Haug, first flight; Arlene Privet, second flight; Marilyn Olson, third flight; Geneva Hamilton, fourth flight; Mary Hinton, fifth flight; Shirley Hanson and Amy McKee, sixth flight; Ann Sueleman, seventh flight; Betty Stencel, eighth flight; Ruby Knutson, ninth flight; Orva Sorenson, 10th flight.

 

10 years ago: 2005

• Results in the Albert Lea City Open golf tournament in the men’s division were Phil Schmidt, championship flight; Scott Rasmussen, first flight; Earl Krieger, second flight; Tony Johnson, third flight; Mike Carlson, fourth flight; Mike Strothman, fifth flight; Ken Pederson, sixth flight. Winners of the women’s division were Kelly Hanson, championship flight; Sarah Olson, first flight; Marcia Sczublewski, second flight.

• In their preseason opening football game, the Minnesota Vikings defeated the Kansas City Chiefs 27-16. Daunte Culpepper threw a 33-yard touchdown pass to Nate Burleson.
