The drought is over.

With a 24-20 win Friday over West Lutheran, the Glenville-Emmons football team snapped a 20-game losing streak dating back to Oct. 17, 2012.

The Wolverines’ offense out-gained West Lutheran by 219 yards, and Glenville-Emmons quarterback Derek Van Ryswyk was 27-of-43 from the pocket for 418 yards with a touchdown and an interception.

Wolverines coach Jared Matson said Van Ryswyk’s passing total was possibly a school record.

“Derek did an excellent job going through his progressions and finding the open receiver,” he said. “It’s something we’ve been working on a lot in our new system. However, the passing attack was a total team effort as the wide receivers made some great catches, and the offensive line did an outstanding job versus the West Lutheran blitzes all night.”

Early in the second quarter, the Wolverines lit the scoreboard with a 17-yard touchdown run by Zach Jacobson. The two-point conversion was good on a toss from Van Ryswyk to Jacobson.

West Lutheran cut its deficit to two points 3 minutes later and took its first lead with 1:17 left in the first half.

After West Lutheran took a 20-8 lead in the third quarter, Glenville-Emmons responded with Jacobson’s second rushing touchdown. The two-point conversion was good on a carry by Carter Dahlum.

The Wolverines’ comeback was capped with a 60-yard touchdown pass from Van Ryswyk to Dahlum with 2:15 left in the fourth quarter. Van Ryswyk hit Bret Belshan in the end zone for the two-point conversion, and Glenville-Emmons led 24-20.

Dahlum caught the ball nine times for 175 yards to lead the Wolverines’ receiving corps. Seth Chapek added eight receptions for 97 yards. Dahlum and Chapek both recorded interceptions as well.

Glenville-Emmons’ defense was led by Jacobson, who had eight tackles.

“Zach was flying all over the field tonight on both sides of the ball,” Matson said. “He was making some big hits on defense and running with a vengeance on offense. He set the tone early with a big hit, and the team fed off his energy.”

Next, the Wolverines (1-1, 1-1 District 9 South East) will host Houston (1-1, 1-1 District 9 South East) at 7 p.m. Friday. The Hurricanes lost their opener 10-8 against Randolph and are coming off a 20-12 win Friday over Lyle/Pacelli.
