A doubles sweep sent the Albert Lea girls’ tennis team to its second win of the season.

The Tigers (2-6, 2-5 Big Nine) edged Faribault 4-3 Thursday at Albert Lea.

“The team is improving from top to bottom,” said Tigers coach Tom Dyrdal. “Today we saw the girls take the skills we’ve been practicing and apply them to the match. We volleyed much better than any other match this season.”

At No. 1 doubles, Sara Kabrud and Sam Skarstad won 7-6, 6-2. Lexus Saltou and Kaedyn Kirchner won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2. At No. 3, Katie Boettcher and Maddie Willey completed the sweep with a 6-2, 6-3 victory.

“All three of our doubles teams played well,” Dyrdal said. “They kept the ball in play in the backcourt and won the points at the net with angle volleys.”

Albert Lea went 1-3 in singles play.

Alexa Drescher won 6-4, 6-3 at No. 3. Dyrdal said she showed improved consistency.

In singles play, Mercedes Saltou, Rachael Wallin and Anna Boettcher lost at Nos. 1, 2 and 4.

“Mercedes and Rachael both had hard-fought three-set matches,” Dyrdal said. “Although they didn’t end up with wins, we wouldn’t have won the match without them. They are our two best players and hold down the top two singles spots for us in every match.”

Albert Lea’s other win this season was 4-3 over Austin on Aug. 27 at the Tigers’ home triangular. Of Albert Lea’s six losses, five were sweeps, and one was 4-3 against Rochester John Marshall.

Next, Albert Lea will play at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday at Rochester Century.
