Albert Lea girls’ swim team makes history with victory against Mankato West

Last season at the Class A girls’ state swimming meet, Albert Lea took third place with a score of 172, while Mankato West finished fifth with 142.

However, the Tigers had never beaten the Scarlets at a dual meet in program history, according to Albert Lea coach Jon Schmitz.

Anna Andersen set a school record in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:00.10 and won three of her four of her events to lead Albert Lea past Mankato West 95-89 Tuesday at Mankato.

The Tigers improved to 8-0 in dual meets this season.

Along with her record in the 100 backstroke, Andersen won the 200 freestyle in 2:01.41 and swam on the first-place 400 freestyle relay team.

Lindsey Horejsi swept all four of her events. She won the 50 freestyle in 23.88 seconds and the 500 freestyle in 5:21.73. Horejsi also swam on the first-place 200 individual medley and 200 freestyle relay teams.

Emily Taylor won two individual events and was on one first-place relay team. She took first place in the 200 individual medley in 2:21.35 and the 100 freestyle in 56.45 seconds. Taylor also swam a leg of the 400 freestyle relay.

Winning the 100-yard breaststroke was Samantha Nielsen in 1:14.16.

Bailey Sandon, Ahnika Jensen and Haley Simon were a part of two first-place relay teams, while Alana Skarstad and Hannah Schwemmler swam legs of one first-place relay.

Next, Albert Lea will compete at 6 p.m. Oct. 22 at Owatonna.
