50 years ago: 1965

• The Albert Lea football team raised its Big Nine Conference record to 4-1 after defeating Mankato 27-0. Doyle Freemyer scored three touchdowns and gained 143 yards for the Tigers.

• In a Border League football game, Freeborn High School defeated Emmons 32-7. Scoring touchdowns for Freeborn were Cletis Merrit, 2, Tom Howser, Paul Weite and Terry Anderson. John Lair scored for the Eagles.

• The Los Angeles Dodgers shutout the Minnesota Twins 4-0 behind Claude Osteen to win Game 3 of the 1965 World Series. The Dodgers defeated the Twins 7-2 to even the series at 2 games each. Don Drysdale pitched the wins. Sandy Koufax picked up the win for the Dodgers in a 7-6 win. The Dodgers won the sixth and final game 2-0 to win the World Series.

 

25 years ago: 1990

• Leah Mattson won the 200-yard freestyle and the 100 butterfly to lead the Albert Lea girls’ swimming team to a 100-84 victory over Owatonna.

• The Moose girls won the Albert Lea Women’s Slowpitch League regular season and the playoffs. Team members were Rel Clemens, Lisa Rippentrop, Wynette Tews, Jo Dagestad, Jean Pestorious, Dawn Picha, Lori Rippentrop, Lynnel Anderson, Barb Goodeman and Wendy Weisert.

• The Alden-Conger-Freeborn volleyball team defeated Medford 3-1 by scores of 15-7, 15-3, 6-15 and 15-7 and improved its Gopher Conference record to 9-1. Kris Boettcher had eight kills and Kim Merritt had seven. Gretchen Brandt was 15 for 15 serving for Alden-Conger-Freeborn.

 

10 years ago: 2005 

• The No. 6 United South Central girls’ tennis team won its first game in section play 7-0 over Sibley East. USC won its second game 6-1 over St. Peter. The Rebels were defeated 4-3 by No. 3 St. James and were eliminated.

• The Albert Lea volleyball team defeated Austin 3-1 by scores of 15-25, 25-21, 25-17 and 25-23. Brooke Woitas had 19 kills and Annika Smed, 18, for the Tigers.

• In a first-round of the Section 2A tournament, the Albert lea boys’ soccer team defeated Mankato Loyola 2-1. Jarred Gavle and Jesse Tovar scored for the Tigers.
