Notes from the Sports Desk by Tyler Julson

Summer sports season is officially coming to a close and that can only mean one thing — fall is nearing.

Not that I don’t like covering summer sports — baseball is one of my favorite sports to watch — but there’s something special about the fall. There seems to be something different about the atmosphere at the beginning of September.

As a former player, I am probably a little partial toward football season, but I enjoy all of the sports I will get the opportunity to cover. Being a fan and graduate of Iowa State University, football season can be a little rough, but I am confident that the program is on the up and any year now they’re going to be a great team. I feel like I say that every year.

Going to school in Northwood, I was only familiar with football and volleyball for nearly all of my early years. Spanning the years after high school I’ve learned quite a bit about the other sports, as well.

I’m pretty excited to start covering soccer. I recently started watching it during the 2014 World Cup and it was some of the most compelling television I have ever seen. I have some experience covering tennis from my days at Iowa State, so I think I’ll be able to jump right into that with little trouble.

Cross country and swim and dive will be completely new to me. I have never so much as even seen either sport live, but I think that makes me even more eager to cover them.

In the short time that I’ve had with the Tribune, I feel like I have already developed so many great relationships with the coaches and fans that I have met at the games. I look forward to creating many more during the fall season.

If you see me at any of the games, don’t hesitate to come up and chat. I would love to hear your ideas on topics for the newspaper and suggestions for our “Meet the Athlete” articles, and I’m always ready to talk about sports.
