An Albert Lea Level 3 sex offender who allegedly strangled someone he knew Wednesday night was charged with a felony Friday in Freeborn County District Court.

Cody Padraic Trott, 27, is charged with felony domestic assault by strangulation, felony threats of violence, felony unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, gross misdemeanor fifth-degree controlled substance possession and gross misdemeanor domestic assault.

Court documents state Trott was charged after officers were dispatched at approximately 9:45 p.m. to a business parking lot in Freeborn County. Upon arriving, the alleged victim reportedly said Trott strangled her and took her vehicle after making allegations against her.

Trott allegedly attacked her by jumping on her in the vehicle, grabbing her throat and threatening to kill her. She reportedly felt like she was going to lose consciousness and her vision became altered during the incident.

After she successfully exited the vehicle and entered a nearby restaurant, Trott allegedly took the vehicle without her permission.

The alleged victim’s glasses were broken “and there was a small amount of blood smeared under her chin,” court documents state.

Trott was later found and arrested after a short foot pursuit.

In a search of the vehicle, an Albert Lea police officer reportedly found a light bulb on the floor of the vehicle next to the gas pedal with white powder inside of it that tested positive for methamphetamine.

At the time of the alleged incident, Trott was on probation. He was sentenced to be on probation for up to five years in December after he pleaded guilty in October to felony escape from custody in connection with Trott cutting his ankle bracelet in November 2016 in Albert Lea.

At that time, Trott was on intensive supervised release after finishing his four-year prison sentence for third-degree criminal sexual conduct in July 2016.

District Court Judge Ross Leuning set conditional bail at $10,000. Trott’s next appearance is scheduled for Jan. 18.

As of Friday afternoon, Trott was in custody.
