MINNEAPOLIS — The Minnesota women’s basketball team continued its series dominance over Border Battle rival Wisconsin Thursday night with a 90-65 win at Williams Arena. It was the 10th straight win in the series for the Golden Gophers, their longest such streak in program history.

Minnesota (15-5, 4-3 B1G) received double-doubles from freshman Destiny Pitts and sophomore Taiye Bello. Pitts posted her team-leading fifth double-double of the season with 15 points and 11 rebounds, while Bello got her second of the year with 13 points and a career-high 13 boards.

Pitts and Bello were two of five Golden Gophers in double figures, all of whom were led by junior Kenisha Bell and her game-high 24 points. It was a breakout performance for Bell, who had just 11 points in her last two games but had 20 by intermission Thursday thanks to a 16-point second quarter. She was 7-of-17 from the field and a perfect 10-of-10 at the free throw line for the game.

The 90 points were the third most ever scored by Minnesota in the series with the Badgers (7-13, 0-7), surpassed only by a 92-point effort in January of 2002 and a 91-point performance in March of 1993.

Minnesota got three 3-pointers each from Pitts and senior Carlie Wagner, who finished with 15 points. Sophomore Gadiva Hubbard was the fifth player in double figures with 10 points.

The Minnesota defense was smothering as it held the Badgers to just 32 percent shooting and 15 percent (3-of-20) on 3-pointers.

The Golden Gophers outscored the Badgers 19-8 in points off turnovers and 25-13 in second chance points.

The game was tied at 9-9 early on, but the Golden Gophers broke it open with a 15-3 run over a six-minute stretch and never looked back. Bello was a key catalyst in the first quarter, leading the team with seven points and adding four rebounds.

Up 24-15 after the first quarter, it was a 10-2 run to start the second stanza that extended the Gophers’ lead even further and put the game out of reach. By the intermission the Gophers held a 56-33 lead, aided by a 22-6 edge on points in the paint and a 28-21 advantage on the boards.

Wisconsin cut into the lead in the third quarter behind an 8-0 run, but never got closer than 19 points throughout the remainder of the contest.

The Golden Gophers remain at home for the next contest as they welcome Iowa to town Sunday. Tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m. as part of the team’s Alumni Weekend.
