School board members will pull another seat up to the table in November as three members’ spots are up for grabs as well as one spot added by public vote last year.

The school board filing period opened Tuesday and runs through 5 p.m. Aug. 14.

Terms for board member Jill Marin, vice chairman Dave Klatt and treasurer Mark Ciota end in January.

It is unclear whether Klatt or Ciota will run again.

Marin said Monday she would not announce whether she plans to file. She encouraged community members to get involved.

“My hope is that all those interested would file for school board,” she wrote in an email. “The district needs strong individuals who are interested in students, education and the community.”

The fourth spot is an additional one, and therefore does not have an incumbent.

Those filing to run for an open school board position can do so by submitting an affidavit of candidacy to the school district clerk at Albert Lea Area Schools district office at 211 W. Richway Drive. Affidavits are available at the same location.

Those who file must pay a $2 fee. Candidates must be 21 years old upon assuming office, an eligible voter, a resident of the school district for 30 days prior to the general election and have no other affidavit on file for any other office in the same election.

Those with questions regarding filing as a school board candidate can contact Executive Assistant to the Office of the Superintendent and School Board Ashley Mattson.

“I hope there’s plenty of candidates and people that want to serve on the school board,” school board chairman Ken Petersen said. “It’s a great opportunity and honor to serve the district.”
