5 things to do this weekend

1. Bikes, Tykes and Tunes

The inaugural Bikes, Tykes and Tunes event is this weekend in Albert Lea. From 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at Frank Hall Park, children ages 3 to 10 years old can take part in the event for $10 — which includes a helmet and being entered into a drawing for a new bike. The previously held bike rodeo has been rolled into this event, and the rain makeup date will be Sunday. The course will be blocked off from traffic. Educational opportunities will be presented along the way, and all children will be required to wear a bike helmet while participating in this event and educated on why wearing a helmet is important to their safety, according to a press release. Adults, community police officers and high school students will bike with children.

2. Whalen and the Willows

For local band members performing their one big area show this year, each ticket is another step closer to the end. Whalen and the Willows, a five-member band based out of Austin and Albert Lea, is a few songs away from completing its first album, “Peaceful,” a follow-up to its 2014 EP, “The Passing Days.” Band members Trevor Bordelon, Tristan Sather, Joshua Whalen, Victoria Torkelson and Craig Rosell will perform at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Marion Ross Performing Arts Center. Tickets are $15 and can be purchased at actonbroadway.com, by calling 877-730-3144 or at the door the night of the show.

3. Farmers Market opening week

The Albert Lea Farmers Market will be open for its first Saturday of the season this weekend. New this year, the market will be back on North Broadway for both Wednesdays and Saturdays after spending a few years in the Northbridge Mall parking lot on Saturdays. The market, which has been in place in Albert Lea since the early 1980s, is open from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Wednesdays and from 9 a.m. to noon Saturdays in the North Broadway parking lot in downtown Albert Lea through Oct. 30.

4. Albert Lea Wrestling Golf Classic

The all-day Albert Lea Wrestling Golf Classic will be Saturday at Green Lea Golf Course. Registration will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday with a shotgun start at noon. Entry is $80 per golfer. There will be a dinner and cash bar from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

5. Food for Backpacks fundraiser

Hayward Lutheran Church will host a fundraiser for District 241 students using the Food for Backpacks program from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday at the church, 200 Main St. in Hayward. There will be a beef and chicken taco bar available for a free-will donation.
