Duplicate Bridge

Duplicate Bridge was played by 13 teams Sept. 3 at the Senior Center in Austin. Winners were Jim Fisher and Dave Ring, first place; Vandy Newman and Ron Peters, second place; John Leisen and Rick Stroup, third place; Gail and Ray Schmidt, fourth place; and Quentin Fiala and Jaynard Johnson, fifth place.

Duplicate Bridge was played by 11 teams Sept. 4 at the Senior Center in Austin. Winners were Julie Prochnow and Lorraine Quinlivan, first place; Tom Flaherty and Stan Schultz, second place; Vandy Newman and Ron Peters, third place; and Eunice Michealis and Dave Ring, fourth place.

Duplicate Bridge is played at 12:30 p.m. Tuesdays and at noon Wednesdays. Players come from Adams, Austin, Albert Lea, Rose Creek, Northwood and Mason City. All bridge players are welcome to come and play. Those who need a partner can call 507-437-2750.

American Legion Auxiliary Leo Carey Unit 56

American Legion Auxiliary Leo Carey Unit 56 met at 7 p.m. Sept. 4 with 14 members in attendance.

President Jo Hanson conducted the meeting. Meeting was called to order.

Opening prayer was said by Carol Smith.

The group stood in silence, recited the Pledge of Allegiance and read the Preamble of the American Legion, before the roll call of officers Secretary Ange Larson and Treasurer Deanne Adams reports were read and approved and placed on file. Chaplain report was read by Adams. Committee reports were given.

Bonnie Schneider reported 20 members need to send in their memberships.

Children and Youth Chairwoman Karen Cibert thanked the group for bringing in school supplies. Schools are in need of snacks as well as trapper keepers, feminine products, deodorant and boys’ socks. She is collecting box tops, loaves for learning and pop tabs. There is a box in the hallway of the American Legion to drop off items. Paulette Kallberg, a teacher from Southwest Middle School, talked about children needing school supplies and snacks.

Joyce Olson thanked Karen Cibert for the article in The Albert Lea Tribune.

Olson talked about men able to join the Auxiliary and membership changes. Any veteran can join the American Legion.

Lynn Koza talked about sending the post newsletter per email.

Recommendations for donations were to the VA gift shop, Operation Military Kids, $5 bill shower and Military Forgotten Kids. The requests received motions and were passed.

The group received thank-yous from Southwest, Sibley and Hawthorne elementary schools for school supplies, from Christopher Abrego and Carter Simon for a scholarship and Ronald McDonald House and Youth for Christ.

The luncheon was served by Adams and Larson. The luncheon will be served in November by Koza and Tasha Kilen.

Smith said the closing prayer and there was a hand salute to the flag. The meeting was then adjourned.
