The Albert Lea wrestling went to Faribault Thursday night to take part in a triangular against Faribault and Mankato East.

While the Tigers took care of business against the Cougars, they struggled against the Falcons and came away with their first loss of the season.

The Tigers went 6-8 in their dual against the Falcons, losing 40-30. Senior Hayden Johnston picked up a pinfall at 285 pounds, while freshmen Cole Glazier and Derrick McMillian each won by pinfall at 145 and 152 pounds, respectively. Junior Caleb Talamantes also notched a fall at 170 pounds.

Sophomore Cam Davis and freshman Aivin Wasmoen were the two other Tigers to pick up a win in the dual. Wasmoen won via a 4-2 decision at 113 pounds and Davis won via a 4-3 decision at 138 pounds.

Albert Lea found its groove again in the next dual, winning 10 of 14 matches against Mankato East and winning 50-21. Picking up pinfalls for Albert Lea were McMillian, Talamantes and Wasmoen. Sophomore Henry Eggum and Glazier each won via a major decision. Also getting wins for the Tigers were Tucker Ericksmoen and Bradley Prestegard. Davis, Kris Cox and Tyler Barney won via forfeit.

“Tonight proved that we have a lot to work on,” said head coach Paul Durbahn. “We’re tough when we do things right, but we made a lot of unnecessary mistakes and gave up a lot of matches we should be winning. This young team needs to stay disciplined, win the tight matches and win the bonus points.”

The Tigers move to 2-1 on the season and will be back on the mat Saturday at a 16-team tournament in Maple Grove.
