Iowa high school sports set tentative start dates

The Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union, along with the Iowa High School Athletic Association, have set tentative dates for spring sports to return to competition and summer sports to begin practices.

All dates are subject to change.

Provided school resumes May 1 in Iowa, all spring sports may hold their first practices that day and can hold their first competition on May 4, with the exception of boys’ and girls’ soccer, which may hold its first competition on May 8, according to a press release.

The postseason dates vary by sport and gender. The boys’ and girls’ track and field teams will have the same postseason schedule with their state meet being scheduled for June 4-6.

Girls’ golf will begin its postseason May 26, leading to the state meet June 8-9. The boys’ golf teams will begin their postseason May 29 with the state meet scheduled for June 11-12.

Both the boys’ and girls’ golf postseason dates may vary depending on course availability.

The team tennis postseason tournament will begin May 23 for both boys and girls with the boys’ state tournament starting June 9 and the girls’ tournament starting June 1. The individual tennis postseason will start May 20 for the boys and May 27 for the girls. The boys individual state tournament will start June 5 and the girls individual state tournament will start June 10.

The boys’ soccer postseason will start June 8 with the state tournament starting June 15. The girls’ soccer postseason will begin June 4 with the state tournament beginning June 16.

As for summer sports, baseball and softball can both start practices May 18 and hold their first competitions June 1. Softball postseason begins July 6 leading to the state tournament starting July 20. Baseball postseason play will begin July 9, leading to the state tournament starting July 24.

Baseball and softball may begin pitching and catching May 1. The IHSAA will provide for 10 days of batting practice between May 1 and May 18.

Postseason host sites and state championship event venues are currently set as previously announced. Any changes will be announced as they become available.
