Area counties see slight increases in COVID-19 cases

Most area counties saw a few new lab-confirmed COVID-19 cases on Sunday, according to the Minnesota Department of Health.

Freeborn County has now had 44 cases, up one from the day prior, and Mower County has had 45 cases, up three.

Two new cases were reported in Steele County, increasing its total to 60, and Faribault County had two new cases, increasing its total to 12.

Waseca County remained steady at 16 cases.

According to Freeborn County Public Health, the new case in Freeborn County is a person in their 40s. As of Sunday, 26 people in Freeborn County no longer needed to be in isolation. There is also a new person that needed to be hospitalized.

Statewide, total positive cases increased to 11,271 cases, an increase in 481 cases. Of the total cases, 6,882 people have recovered and no longer need isolation, and 578 people have died, an increase in 20 from the previous day. Of the total deaths, 464 resided in long-term care or assisted living facilities.

Fifteen of the new deaths were in Hennepin County in residents ranging from 50 to 99.

The Minnesota Department of Health stated 434 people are hospitalized as of today, including 199 in intensive care.

The median age of hospitalized cases is 61, though ages have ranged from an infant less than 1 month old to a person 102 years of age. The median age of the people who have died is 83, though ages have ranged from 30 to 109. The median age for all cases is 44.

The highest number of overall cases have been reported in Hennepin County, with 3,558 cases and 389 deaths. Counties with the next highest numbers are Stearns County with 1,405 cases and Nobles County with 1,255.

Ramsey County has had 920 cases, and Anoka County has had 549 cases. Olmsted County has had 368 cases, and Rice County has had 114.

The department stated 111,088 tests have been completed, including 14,883 through the Minnesota Department of Health’s public health lab and 96,205 through external laboratories.
