James William Skiff, age 64 of Mattoon, Ill., passed away suddenly on Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2012.

Jim was born on Jan. 20, 1948, in Albert Lea, a son of the late Donald R. and Ruth M. (Olson) Skiff. He married Barbara Lindeman on June 9, 1973, in Woodbury, and they have celebrated 39 years of marriage and friendship. In addition to his wife Barbara, he is survived by three children, Jessica (Nathan) Larscheid of Woodbury, Jillian (Bradley) Carlson of Keswick, Va. and Justin Skiff of Phoenix, Ariz.; a granddaughter, Natalie Larscheid; his mother-in-law, Maryldine (Lindeman) Stoltzmann; a sister, and many brothers-in law, sisters-in law, nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Dennis C. Skiff.

Jim received his bachelor’s degree from Minnesota State University at Mankato and his master’s degree in international business management from the American Graduate School of International Management at Thunderbird University in Arizona. His entrepreneurial spirit led him to a varied, interesting and successful career which he enjoyed immensely. Most recently, he was president of the former U.S. Soy in Mattoon, Ill.

He shared his lifelong sense of adventure and passion for travel with his family which took them around the world, and they now have fond memories of places they call home. He was able to develop and maintain many great friendships along the way. He was encouraging and supportive in helping others along life’s path. He will be remembered for his patience and humility.

Jim was a loving and devoted husband and father. His greatest joy in life was sharing with Barb the gift of raising their family and spending time with her and their children, sons-in-law and granddaughter. He took great interest in developing a personal and unique relationship with those closest to him. He leaves his family with countless, wonderful memories, which will be imprinted on their hearts forever. His wit, humor and sincerity will be greatly missed by all those whose lives he touched.

A time of gathering will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. on Friday at St. John Lutheran Church, 1975 St. John’s Dr. in Woodbury, MN. A memorial service honoring and celebrating his life will follow at 11 a.m. and lunch will be served following the service. Memorial gifts in honor of his life will be used for a donation of the family’s choice to be named later.
