Pope is right about helping the poor

This is in reply to a Jan. 30 letter headed “Republicans good for private sector” that blasted my letter of Jan. 22.

Anyone who watches the news and has common sense knows how ridiculous this statement is. President Barack Obama and the Democrats are trying their best to get universal health care up and going, raise the minimum wage, extend unemployment benefits, reduce tax benefits on the top 1 percent, get their jobs bills through and protect Social Security, Medicare and food stamps. The Republicans do everything they can think of to block any of these. They have filibustered this Congress more than 400 times. This is more than any other Congress has ever used this tactic. This is why they call it the do-nothing Congress.

I am 73 years old and I have never seen a president so dedicated to trying to do so much for the Average Joe. If you say the Republicans have done so much for the less fortunate in the past, then I want to know when they changed. Because they sure haven’t done anything for them lately.

The pope came out with another good one. Talk about trickle-down Reagonomics. When the glass gets full, it’s supposed to spill over down to the less fortunate. The pope accused the glass holders of getting a bigger glass to prevent it from spilling over. It’s so nice to have a liberal pope who isn’t afraid of telling it like it is. I’m not a Catholic, but I could sure rub elbows with this guy.

In answer to the letter writer blasting me on Feb. 2 titled “People can quit when they wish” is this. Anyone with common sense knows what working for slave wages means. I’m not even going to waste my time on this discussion. I wish the writer would have addressed my friend who is under assisted medical care and who has to go to Rochester to get dental care because no dentist in Albert Lea will accept his Insurance.

I thought doctors took an oath to help anyone needing medical services. He works for minimum wages and has to drive 120 miles round trip for dental services. This costs him $25 to $30 for gas plus parking every time he goes. It is obvious all the dentists in Albert Lea are Republicans. No Democratic dentist would treat people this way.

I do appreciate all you far-right Republicans for reading my letters. I’m not going to give up trying to educate you.
