How are juries usually selected?

Does anyone out there in this area ever remember anyone being able to choose their own jury in a murder trial?

Does this mean that everyone who goes to trial will be able to say they want to pick their own jury panel? I guess if I were on trial for say murdering my abusive husband than I could pick all women for my jury? Just wondering.
