50 years ago: 1966

The Albert Lea High School basketball team defeated Owatonna 43-41 for its fourth straight win. Steve Ball hit a jump shot with 10 seconds left for the winning margin. Dan Doty led the Tigers’ scoring with 14 points.

Gary Christenson scored 16 points and Gary Grundmyer had 18 rebounds for Northwood in its 73-64 victory over Garner.

Rick Swanson scored three goals, including the game winner in overtime, in Albert Lea’s 4-3 win against Orono.

The Ellendale High School basketball team defeated New Richland 84-46 and raised its Gopher Conference league leading record to 7-1. Daryl Paulson scored 19 points, Duane Nelson 14 and Roger Langley 12 for Ellendale.

 

25 years ago: 1991

Jon Cluppert scored 18 points and Chris Boysen 13 to lead the ALHS boys’ basketball team over Mankato East 71-52 for its fourth straight win.

Winners in the first round of the Elks Hoop Shoot included the following: Boys ages 8-9 Danny Wagner (Emmons), ages 10-11 Greg Baldus (Albert Lea), age 12-13 Mike Honsey (Emmons); Girls ages 8-9 Alyssa Nygaard (Albert Lea), ages 10-11 Nicole Peter (Albert Lea) and ages 12-13 Heidi Irvine (Albert Lea).

Sara Paulson scored 30 points, Leah Fallgatter 13 and Karen Wallin 11 for Northwood-Kensett in its 60-45 win over Lake Mills. The Bulldogs were led by Karla Knudtson with 19 points.

The Glenville-Emmons girls’ basketball team defeated NRHEG 53-45. Kelly Peterson scored 16 points and Darci Escherich 15 for the Wolverines and the Panthers were led by Kristine Kroeger with 15 points.

 

10 years ago: 2006

With all starters scoring in double figures, the Alden-Conger boys’ basketball team defeated LeCenter 73-47. Jordan Montes scored 24 points, Derek Peterson 12, Sam Hallman, Mitchell Kleinschrodt and Alex Bute 11 points each.

Mark Walton scored two goals, and Alex Brandt, Adam Royce and Jared Bowman scored one goal each for the ALHS hockey team in its 5-4 win over Owatonna.

Ashley Lau scored 16 points and Jordan VanRyswyk added 15 for the G-E girls’ basketball team in its 60-37 win over Cannon Valley Lutheran.
