A North Mankato truck driver who hit and killed a Wells man this spring was given a stayed jail sentence Monday in Blue Earth County District Court.

Danny Salazar, 27, was given a 90-day jail sentence, which was stayed for one year.

Sentencing came after Salazar pleaded guilty to misdemeanor careless driving in connection with the March 29 crash near Mapleton that killed Alan Remington, 65.

Salazar was driving a semi truck and didn’t stop for the stop sign as he turned from westbound Minnesota Highway 30 right onto Minnesota Highway 22, according to the criminal complaint.

Remington was heading south on Highway 22 in a Buick LeSabre and was struck on the driver’s side by the semi truck. The semi rolled onto its side and the LeSabre went into a ditch, according to the complaint.

Remington died at the scene. Salazar was taken to the hospital with injuries deemed not life-threatening.

Salazar admitted he ran the stop sign. He told authorities he was on the Highway 30 detour due to the construction occurring on Highway 22.

Salazar was charged with failing to stop for a stop sign, failing to drive with due care and failing to stop at the entrance of a through highway, but those charges were dismissed.
