Was a new record set Sunday in Albert Lea?
The temperature Sunday of 72 degrees above zero, as recorded at the weather observing station at the Albert Lea Municipal Airport, set a record for Nov. 8. The previous high temperature recorded for this date was 71 degrees above zero in 1931.
The temperature recorded at the airport can be seen at the National Weather Service’s Web site: www.weather.gov.
The city hit 70 degrees around 2 p.m. Sunday. It climbed to 72 briefly around 3:30 p.m. and was back down to 70 around 4 p.m.
The Albert Lea Wastewater Treatment Plant southeast of Albert Lea Lake along the Shell Rock River also records temperatures. It reports the high temperature for Sunday as 68 degrees, not surpassing the 1931 record. Many of the city’s records, including the 1931 high of 71, were recorded by the Wastewater Treatment Plant, which at the time was in Albert Lea on the northwest shore of Albert Lea Lake.
The airport nowadays is closer to the population of the city than the treatment plant is.
The Tribune has one collection of the records and staff members seek to update the temperatures when they are broken.
The forecast for Tuesday is sunny, with a high near 58, according to the National Weather Service. There will be a calm wind becoming east between 4 and 7 mph. Veterans Day looks to be mostly sunny, with a high near 55.
