1991 — Jon Schmidtz, a 1979 Albert Lea High School graduate who became the school’s swimming coach in 1988, was named by the Tribune as Coach of the Year.

1981 — The Albert Lea High School wrestling team defeated the Elk River High school team with a score of 26-23 to become the state Class AA dual champions.

1961 — Basketball fans attending the district games in Albert Lea were stranded in the city by an 11-inch snowstorm.
