Memorial services for Rhoda Jean White, 92, of St. John’s Lutheran Home and formerly of New Richland will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in New Richland. The Rev. Scott Williams will officiate. Interment will be in the Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell, Fla. Visitation be one hour prior to the service at the church. Jean died Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2013, at Mayo Clinic Health System in Albert Lea.

Jean White was born on Oct. 26, 1920, to Robert Amos and Evelyn Amanda (Harrison) Perkins in Long Prairie. After graduating from high school in 1938 she went to nurse’s training at Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis and received her registered nurse degree in 1942. She joined the U.S. Army Nurse Corps in 1943. She had duty on a hospital ship in the Mediterranean area. While in the service Jean met and married Charles W. White from Indianapolis, Ind. After the war, the couple lived in Long Prairie, then Mankato and Rochester. In 1981 they moved to Florida. After her husband’s death in 2004, Jean moved back to Minnesota to be near family and old friends.

During her nursing career, she worked at Madonna Towers in Rochester, Immanuel in Mankato, as well as nursing homes in Wabasha and Florida. She was a member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, the American Legion Auxiliary in Hartland, the Women Vets in Albert Lea and the Hartland Bunco Club. She enjoyed family gatherings and spending time with friends. Jean was a lifelong sports fan, especially of the Minnesota Twins, the Minnesota Vikings and liked watching the golf channel. She enjoyed card games, and cooking and baking for the holidays was one of her loves. Her cheerful whistle, her fudge and Christmas cookies and her cinnamon rolls will always be remembered by her loved ones. Blessed be her memory.

Survivors include her children, Kathy Vokoun of Hartland, Tom (Wendy) White of Pt. Townsend, Wash., Chuck (Paula) White of North Mankato, and Bill White of Lexington, S.C.; grandchildren, Kris Allison (Trevis), Scott (Susan) Melom, Heather (Mario) Encinosa, Eric White, Lora White, Ryan (Anne) White, Kyle (Bryanna) White, Jennifer White, Barrett (Alicia) White, and Chase White; step-granddaughters, Sarah (Josh) Conklin and Becky Phillops; great-grandchildren, Brooke, Megan, Ashley, Zach, Skylar, Sydney, Clair, Tanner, Autumn, Blake, Brett, Breanna and Brody; step-greatgrandsons, Trace and Kyle; sisters Pat Steinhauser of Park Forest, Ill. and Judy (Ben) Lukes of Bozeman, Mont.; and a sister-in-law Helen Perkins of Cresco, Iowa.

Jean was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Charles, an infant son, son-in-law Merle Vokoun, her brother Don Perkins and brother-in-law Fred Steinhauser.

Jean was a resident of St. John’s Lutheran Home for the past seven months. Her family is very appreciative of the time and love shown her.
