50 years ago: 1964

The Kiester baseball team remained undefeated in the amateur State Line League with a 16-2 win over Glenville. Darrel Meyer led Kiester with four hits in five at-bats.

Hayward moved into third place in the State Line League with a 7-5 victory over Emmons. Neil Skaar and Wayne Wacholz each had three hits for Hayward. Jim Lair was the winning pitcher.

In Southern Minnesota baseball, Albert Lea defeated Rochester 4-3. Mike Hoffman had three hits and was the winning pitcher.

Conger won its eighth straight game in the National Division of the Albert Lea Church League when it defeated St. Theodores 4-3. Ken Heine remained undefeated on the mound. Gary Johnson had three hits for Conger.

Hayward defeated Clarks Grove in a high-scoring Church League game, 22-16. Hayward was led by Bruce Olson and Gary Skaar with three hits each.

Kent Dugstad homered for First Lutheran in its 18-4 win over Central Lutheran in a third Church League game.

 

25 years ago: 1989

The Glenville-Emmons Legion baseball team won the Five Star League title. Team members were Paul Ahearn, Oscar Mehus, Terry Schilling, Jason Senne, Jason Peterson, Matt Honsey, Jamie Beck, Dan Follmuth, Greg Severtson, Shannon Froendt, Bill Toulouse, Tim Kral, Jeff Vierkant and Tracy Monson. Wendell Schilling was the head coach and Steve Williamson was the assistant coach.

 

10 years ago: 2004

The Albert Lea Elks U15 girls’ soccer team won the Southern Division playoff and qualified for the Minnesota state tournament. Albert Lea won its first playoff game 3-2 over Prior Lake. Leah Walters scored two goals, and Emma Dahl added one. Albert Lea defeated Rochester 1-0 in the title game on a goal by Walters.

The Albert Lea Elks U12 team won four games in the Southern District and advanced to the Minnesota state tournament. Albert Lea defeated Burnsville, 2-1; No. 1 Rochester, 3-1; Prior Lake, 5-1; and Lakeville, 6-1.
