50 years ago: 1965
• The Northwood Kensett football coach greeted eight letter winners at the start of practice: Mark Davey, Bruce Helvick, Larry Loken, Charles Myhre, Lynn Watney, Tom Nelson, Orville Hagen and Enos Laberg.
• The Cabin Bar won the Albert Lea Women’s Softball League regular-season and playoff titles. Team members included Maureen Carlson, Karen Haaf, Bon Jo Johnston, Donna Staffiero, Chris Dahl, JoAnn Pederson, Judy Callahan, Lorrie Kelly, Margaret Steele, Mary Stiles, Jan Larson, Mary Severson and Wilma Ditlevson.
• The Methodist team won the playoff title in the American Division of the Albert Lea Church Softball League. Team members included Floyd Wagner, Bill Corey, Don Rippentrop, Rog Fischer, Dick Vandegrift, Cliff Cavanaugh, Dennis Dick, Bill Hammer, Pat Fogerty and Gerry Forshee.
25 years ago: 1990
• Winners in the 1990 City Open at Green Lea Golf Course in the men’s division were Mike Bennett, championship flight; Scott Rasmussen, presidential flight; Earl Krieger, first flight; Scott Pirsig second flight; Jon Hedland, third flight; Frank Wilcox, fourth flight; Steve Nelson, fifth flight; Vern Olson, sixth flight; Jerry Vogt, seventh flight; Bob Dreisbach, eighth flight; Craig Stickfort, ninth flight. Winners in the women’s division included Claudia Pilot, championship flight; Virginia Hanson, championship flight low net; Karen Boyer, first flight low gross; Bernie Moreau, first flight low net.
• Head coach of both the boys’ and girls’ cross country teams, Howard Melon greeted four boys’ letter winners and eight girls’ letter winners at the start of practice. Returning boys were Chad Anderson, Tom Anderson, Bill Gjersvik and Dan Holl. The returning girls were Bette Olvera, Amy Stay, Lisa Zeman, Rhonda Galkin, Jenna Seul, Chris Wangen, Kirsten Nowak and Jessica Polley.

• In the opening cross country meet at United South Central in the boys’ division with seven teams, USC/Alden-Conger placed third, and Albert Lea took fourth. In the girls’ division with eight teams, USC/A-C placed third, and Albert Lea took sixth. In the No. 1 runner division, Levi Budd of Albert Lea placed third, and Eric Youngolson of USC/A-C placed fourth.
