50 years ago: 1965
• John Willmert of Albert Lea rolled the first sanctioned 300 perfect game in Albert Lea history. John was bowling for Federal at the Town Club Alley and finished with a 696 series.
• Winners of the annual Punt, Pass and Kick contest were Mark Behrends, 8-year-old division; Bradley Walcholz, 9; Tony Dooley, 10; Rick Boyer, 11; Scott Knudson 12; and Allan Wulff, 13.
• The Minnesota Twins won the first two games in the 1965 World Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Twins won the first game 8-2 with Jim “Mudcat” Grant as the winning pitcher. Jim Kaat shut down the Dodgers 5-1 in the second game.
• Tony Oliva of the Minnesota Twins won the American League batting title with a .321 average. The National League batting title was won by Roberto Clemente of the Pittsburgh Pirates at .329.
25 years ago: 1990
• The Albert Lea football team was defeated by the Owatonna Indians 22-20. Scoring touchdowns for the Tigers were Chad Bohonek and Jon Cluppert.
• The Wells-Easton football team improved its record to 5-1 with a 27-13 victory over St. James. Nick Kails gained 136 yards on 29 carries for the Wildcats and scored 1 touchdown. Also scoring touchdowns for Wells-Easton were Matt Beckmann, 2, and Josh Lorenz.
• The Lake Mills football team remained unbeaten at 4-0 after defeating North Butler 35-12. Peter Brekken scored two touchdowns, and Justin Kester gained 135 yards on 30 carries for the Bulldogs.
10 years ago: 2005
• Jesse Tovar scored two goals and Zack McGinnis scored once for the Albert Lea boys’ soccer team in its 3-1 win over Mankato East.
• In a 65-minute soccer game because of bad weather, the Albert Lea girls’ team shut out Mankato East 3-0. Scoring goals were Whitney Wilson, Heather Greibrok and Amanda Arends.
• The Albert Lea football defeated Winona 49-12 for their first win of the year. Matt Morris scored 3 touchdowns and Corey Berggren scored twice for the Tigers.
