Lt. Col. Jack H. Welsch, USAF, Ret., died Saturday, Sept. 13, 2014. He was born Feb. 2, 1925, in McGregor, Iowa, to parents John and Mabel Welsch. He’s preceded in death by his parents and siblings Chuck and Vivian.

Jack kept his promise to his father and graduated high school before enlisting in the military in February 1943. He was first in his flight class and became a navigator. He later graduated from the University of Omaha with a Bachelor of Science degree in military science. He proudly served his country through three wars. He also was a member of the second class of the Army Special Forces. He was awarded the Bronze Star for meritorious service in Vietnam.

After retirement, Jack embarked on his second career as an educator. He was an aerospace education instructor at Shattuck Military Academy. He then started the JROTC program at Hernando High School in Brooksville, Fla. He worked tirelessly to improve teacher pay and benefits in Florida.

Jack is survived by the love of his life, his wife of 40 years, Florence; a very special grandson, Andre’ Dennen, who stayed by his grandfather’s side until the end; his sons Jack (Patty), Jim (Cindy) and Jeff (Susan) Dennen; grandchildren Nick (Tina) Dennen, Natalie (Chris) Brown, Lauren and Matt and Julia Dennen; great-grandson Jacob Dennen; and sister, Marge Brown.

Jack was a true American hero. He will be greatly missed by everyone who knew him and eternally loved by those closest to him.

Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. today at Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, Fla.
