50 years ago: 1964

• The Albert Lea boys’ basketball team opened its season with two straight wins. The Tigers defeated Fairmont 65-59 in the first game with Jim Bratvold scoring 22 points and Ron Holton with 20. In its second game of the week, Albert Lea beat Minneapolis Central 56-49. Jim Bratvold with 21 points and Ron Holton with 18 again led the scoring.

• Rick Swanson and Doyle Freemyer each scored two goals for the Albert Lea boys’ hockey team in its 6-1 win over Highland Park. Also scoring goals for the Tigers were Dick Wayne and Mike Dorman.

25 years ago: 1989

• The Owatonna Indians, the defending boys’ basketball state champions, defeated Albert Lea 69-35 in the Tigers’ opener. The Tigers evened their season record at 1-1 with a 73-69 victory over Fairmont. Pat Sullivan and Jon Cluppert scored 15 points each, Chad Hinz, 13, and Matt Guse, 12, to lead the balanced scoring for the Tigers.

• Lori Coughlin scored 20 points to lead the Albert Lea girls’ basketball team to a 53-51 win over Winona. Carla Zevenbergen scored 12 points had 14 rebounds for Albert Lea.

• In its season-opening boys’ hockey game, the Albert Lea boys defeated Park Center 4-3. Scoring goals for the Tigers were Chad Hacker, Kyle Thomas, Anders Larson and Justin Mattson.

• NRHEG defeated Hayfield 64-63 to even its boys’ basketball record at 1-1. Troy Sommers scored 14 points, Tyler Peterson, 13, and Jason Tracy, 12, for NRHEG.

 

Ten years ago: 2004

• The Albert Lea girls’ hockey team raised its Big Nine Conference record to 3-2 with a 5-3 won over Owatonna. Laura Hillman scored four goals for Albert Lea.

• The Alden-Conger girls’ basketball team remained undefeated at 4-0 after defeating United South Central 36-35. The Knights were led by Emily Appel with 13 points and Vanessa Politz with 10. Kirsten Thisius scored nine points for USC.

• The Lake Mills boys’ basketball team defeated Northwood-Kensett 51-46. Cole Christianson scored 13 points and Joe Woelfel, 10, for the Bulldogs. The Vikings were led by Preston Davidson with 12 points and Eric Parker with 11.
