The Albert Lea Police Department is warning residents of a reported phone scam.

The Police Department posted Thursday on its Facebook page that the department fielded several phone calls regarding a police impersonator calling people and advising them they missed jury duty and that there was an arrest warrant out for them.

The caller reportedly identified himself as “Lt. Reed” with the Freeborn County Sheriff’s Office and attempted to have people buy Green Dot MoneyPaks to pay their fines.

“This is an obvious scam,” the Police Department stated. “There is no such name with our agency or with (the Sheriff’s Office), and we would never have you pay fines in that manner, nor would we call you to pay your fine.”

The post asked people to notify their elderly loved ones as the elderly are highly targeted with these scams.
