Through 16 matches, the Lake Mills volleyball team has a spotless resume.

With a 3-0 sweep Tuesday at Garner-Hayfield/Ventura by scores of 25-12, 25-15 and 25-9, the No. 8 (2A) Bulldogs improved to 16-0 in matches and 37-0 in games.

Five Lake Mills hitters had four or more kills. Cede Byrnes and Lexi Groe led the team with eight kills each. Madison Shifflett and Hailey Borgmeyer both had seven, and Brianna Smith added four.

“We continued to spread the ball around very well,” said Bulldogs coach Jim Boehmer. “I was pleased with our effort tonight.”

In season kills, Shifflett and Groe are Nos. 2 and 3 in the West Division of the Top of Iowa Conference. Shifflett has 95; Groe, 82.

Kelsea Heintzman led Lake Mills with 27 assists. Her season total of 302 is sixth in Class 2A.

Defensively, Borgmeyer had a team-high nine digs, and Groe led the Bulldogs with three blocks.

As a team, Lake Mills was 69-of-75 serving. Byrnes posted a team-high four ace serves.

“We were aggressive at the serving line tonight,” Boehmer said. “We missed six serves, but we were working to score, and we can live with a lower percentage if we can attack their offense with the serve. We have three very tough top-spin servers, and they are very dangerous.”

Although the Bulldogs haven’t lost, they have things to work on, Boehmer said.

“We have to start stronger and faster in sets, and we need to eliminate any point runs by our opponents,” he said.

Next, the Bulldogs will play in a tournament at 9 a.m. Saturday at Forest City. Just like Lake Mills, the Indians are undefeated. Forest City (10-0 overall) swept West Hancock on Tuesday.
