The seventh-ranked Lake Mills wrestling team capped its regular dual season by rolling over St. Edmond and Newman Thursday evening, according to a press release.
The night started with the Bulldogs walloping a thin Gael squad, 70-9. St. Edmond won only two matches in the dual.
“There were only five matches in the first dual, but our kids wrestled well,” said coach Alex Brandenburg. “Their two wins were by ranked wrestlers, and freshman Cael Boehmer took one of them into overtime.”
The momentum continued into the final dual of the night when the Bulldogs squared off against the Knights. Lake Mills started off great, surging to 26-0 behind five wins.
“The kids were really fired up for the Newman dual because they have been wrestling well lately,” said Brandenburg. “Our kids are doing a better job lately of fighting the whole match, especially when they get on their backs. That will be really important down the road if we qualify for regional duals.”
The momentum continued throughout the dual, as Lake Mills would win 11 of the 14 bouts to drub Newman, 59-16. The team finished its regular season with a 29-7 dual record and hope to continue to add to the win total when they host a regional Feb. 9.
“Although our dual record is not all that flashy, I think it is a great accomplishment by our kids because our schedule was the toughest it has ever been,” Brandenburg said. “Hopefully we reap the benefits of a tough schedule as we enter the postseason.”
