“Algona is one of the best programs in Iowa, and Shelly (TerHark) is a coach I respect as much as any in Iowa,” said Bulldogs coach Jim Boehmer. “So for our girls to rise to the occasion in the sixth and final match of the day was pretty awesome.”

Lake Mills showed depth at the net as five players — Hailey Borgmeyer, Cede Byrnes, Lexi Groe, Madison Shifflett and Brianna Smith — had four or more kills against Algona.

The Bulldogs began the tournament with a 21-10, 21-7 victory over Belmond-Klemme and followed with wins over Webster City, 21-18, 21-16; Northwood-Kensett, 21-13, 21-13; North Union, 21-7, 21-10; and No. 13 (AAA) Spirit Lake 21-14, 21-19 before the championship.

“We find little ways to improve each day,” Boehmer said. “We have great leadership on this team and some kids who have truly committed to the team.”

Overall, Lake Mills was 235-for-246 serving with 23 ace serves. Emily Orban and Borgmeyer were both 40-for-40.

Boehmer said Orban had success defensively on the back row as well.

“She dug some of the best balls I’ve seen in some time,” he said. “She was on fire against Algona. They could not find the floor.”

Shifflett and Byrnes each posted 31 kills on the day.

Kelsea Heintzman racked up 106 assists and seven kills.

“She spread the ball out today and even picked up some kills,” Boehmer said. “She makes teams respect her first before they worry about a hitter.”

Heintzman also was 50-for-52 serving.

Next, the Bulldogs will host Eagle Grove on Parents’ Night at 7:30 p.m. Thursday. Eagle Grove is 3-8 and has won three of its last five matches.

Lake Mills’ next tournament will be at 9 a.m. next Saturday in Central Springs.
